Chuck Schumer said in a press conference Wednesday, “We have a population that is not reproducing on its own with the same level that it used to. The only way we’re going to have a great future is if we welcome immigrants”.

Schumer also said we have a shortage of workers and need mass amnesty and a legal pathway for citizenship for more immigrants because of this. Twitter users had opinions on the Senator’s comments: .

They say that it’s empowering to stay single forever and never start a family, claim having kids destroys the environment, promote abortion as a moral good, and their solution when they realize people aren’t having enough kids is to import the third world to replace them. Twitter User

Who actually worries about this? Nobody is “realizing” anything. Our infrastructure is overloaded as is, whether it be legal or illegal immigrants, even citizens having 5 or 6 kids. We don’t need more people. Children, immigrants, doesn’t matter. Twitter User

Schumer’s position on immigration has seemingly evolved from earlier in his political career when he said, “Illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple. People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who entered the U.S. legally.” — Senator Chuck Schumer, 2009

Schumer was among top politicians like President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who whole throatily condemned the overturning of Roe vs. Wade earlier this year. Pro-choice politicians and activist groups denounced the ruling and nationwide demonstrations occurred for weeks following.

Today’s decision makes crystal clear the contrast as we approach the November elections: elect more MAGA Republicans if you want nationwide abortion bans, the jailing of women and doctors and no exemptions for rape or incest. Or elect more pro-choice Democrats to save Roe and protect a woman’s right to make their own decisions about their body, not politicians.- Chuck Schumer Source

Per the CDC, in 2019, 629,898 legal induced abortions were reported. The abortion rate was 11.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15–44 years, and the abortion ratio was 195 abortions per 1,000 live births.

Abortion rights are thought to have been one catalyst in energizing Gen Z young voters to turn out in the midterms on November 8th. The Washington Post reported about 1 in 8 voters overall were under 30, and more than half supported Democratic candidates. The “red wave” turned into more of a ripple with Republicans only taking a slim majority in one chamber.

My message to Senate Republicans is this: Work with us. Work with us on this widely supported policy so we can reach agreement that will protect families and strengthen our economy. -Chuck Schumer

Schumer emphasized in his press conference that the time is now to enact immigration reform. Likely referring to the lame duck session coming up prior to the 118th congress while the Democrats are still the majority in Congress.
